Evacuated

We're safe at Mom and Dad's house. They have a two-story, no big trees, and no danger of flooding or storm surge. Ike has now turned a little more to the east, placing the eye directly over our house. It appears that the storm surge will be the worst we've had in recent memory - is this comparable to Alicia in 1983 or Carla in 1961? The news is non-stop live footage of Galveston west end being inundated, Harborside is flooding, Kemah Boardwalk is taking on water. And the outer bands aren't expected for another 3-4 hours.

Our house is on the edge of the storm surge warning. Models predict water on our street only in a Cat 4-Cat 5 storm. I'm really concerned about the wind and the trees. There's nothing to do but wait and the not knowing is definitely the hardest part.

We had very little traffic coming into Missouri City, though there were very long lines for gasoline and several stations were out of gas. Ft. Bend schools were open yesterday and we had dinner at our regular Mexican restaurant. This morning we took the girls for a 2+ mile walk around the neighborhood. We're waiting for the rest of the family to arrive; there will be 17 here tonight.
